Memorial Human Rights Defence Centre

The older Memorial Human Rights Center was created as a noncommercial civil group united by principles of humanity and determination to promote the respect of human rights and to advance civil dignity. The center saw its mission in making a contribution to a universal respect for human rights and basic freedoms in the Russian Federation as well as in other countries.

On April 5, 2022 the court decision to liquidate the Memorial Human Rights Center came into force. In the new format, its members are able to maintain the work in human rights defense that they had been carried out for three decades prior. In June 2022 a group of the HRC's collaborators and former members created a new organization: Memorial Human Rights Defence Centre.

Its activities are as follows:

  • monitoring and making available information about abuses of human rights and basic freedoms
  • research of mass human rights abuses
  • facilitates the protection of people who are politically prosecuted or unlawfully oppressed, as well as the protection of people from vulnerable groups
  • facilitates access to sources of information
  • raises public awareness on matters of human rights
  • promotes the humanization of penitentiary institutions
  • supports the efforts to respect humanitarian legal norms during military conflicts
  • provides help pro bono to victims of human rights abuses
  • supports human rights defender groups and participants of the international human rights movement
